Kuffiyeh made in china

ROYAL SCHOOL OF DRAMATIC ARTS, UK

Kuffiyeh Made in China by Dalia Taha is a sharp, satirical play that interrogates questions of identity, nationalism, and globalisation through the iconic Palestinian symbol of the kuffiyeh.

Set in a contemporary Palestinian household, the play unfolds as family members debate politics, resistance, and belonging, revealing contradictions between ideology and everyday reality.

Through biting humor and rapid dialogue, Taha exposes how national symbols can be commodified, diluted, and disconnected from lived experience, particularly when a symbol of resistance is manufactured abroad. The play challenges romanticiSed notions of patriotism, asking what resistance means in a globaliSed world and how identity is shaped when cultural symbols are reduced to consumer goods.

Performed by the third year at RADA, the production offered a unique opportunity for drama school students to explore Israeli and Western apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and Palestinian resistance against this.
