the HOST
The Host is Nessah Muthy’s critically acclaimed and urgently relevant response to the Brexit vote and forced displacement of thousands of refugees to Europe.
Bold, funny, and unflinchingly honest, the play resists easy answers, instead asking difficult questions about belonging, responsibility, and what it truly means to offer sanctuary.
Syrian refugee Rabea finds an unlikely host in Yasmin, a fellow 20-year-old, in her cramped South London flat. As a tentative friendship begins to form between two young people from vastly different worlds, the personal quickly becomes political. On the same housing estate, Yasmin’s family are grappling with economic hardship, generational conflict, and the harm their rascist behaviour has caused.
The production showcases a vibrant ensemble of bright young performers in a sparky, comic, and deeply human story set in London. Blending humour with moments of sharp emotional truth, The Host explores cultural identity, difference, and solidarity in contemporary Britain, capturing the tensions and hopes of a generation coming of age in uncertain times.
